Police were out in force Sunday in several Chinese cities to counter
an online call by an overseas website to emulate pro-democracy
protests like those that are sweeping the Middle East.
Uniformed and plain-clothes police were deployed in Beijing and
Shanghai to keep strolling shoppers moving and prevent any groups from
   gathering.
Several foreign journalists were physically assaulted. Others,
including Voice of America reporters, were detained and their notes,
   recordings and photos were confiscated.
