Uniformed and plain-clothes police were deployed in Beijing and Shanghai to keep strolling shoppers moving and prevent any groups from gathering. Several foreign journalists were physically assaulted. Others, including Voice of America reporters, were detained and their notes, recordings and photos were confiscated.
