Energy and climate change to be main topics of conversation in Chicago
Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore (File)Energy and climate change will be
the main topics of conversation when U.S. President-elect Barack Obama
meets Tuesday with former Vice President and Nobel laureate Al Gore in
Chicago. The former vice president won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for
his work on environmental issues, and political observers say Tuesday's
discussion could be critical as Mr. Obama prepares to announce more
appointments to his Cabinet. The president-elect is expected to nominate
the heads of the Energy and Interior Departments in the coming days, as
well as a new administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency. All
three share responsibility for environmental and energy issues. Advisors
to Mr. Obama say the former vice president is not under consideration
for any of the posts, but during the presidential campaign Mr. Obama
said he would rely on Gore for his expertise. In addition to winning the
Nobel Peace Prize, Gore created and starred in an award-winning!
climate change documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. He also served two
terms as vice president under President Bill Clinton, then ran
unsuccessfully for the presidency against George Bush in 2000.Vice
President-elect Joe Biden also is scheduled to attend Tuesday's meeting.
