UN Humanitarian Chief Flees Darfur Refugee Camp
-----------------------------------------------

http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=121FFBB:415DB6A UN Undersecretary
for Humanitarian Affairs, Jan Egeland, and his entourage forced to
flee Kalma Camp Monday, after agitated crowd demanding that
international troops protect them smashed windows in nearby vehicles

Jan Egeland The United Nations' top humanitarian official has fled a
camp for displaced people in Sudan's troubled Darfur region after an
apparent misunderstanding turned demonstrators into a mob.

Jan Egeland and his entourage were forced to flee the Kalma Camp
Monday when a crowd demanding protection by U.N. peacekeepers attacked
a translator.  A rumor had spread that the translator had links to the
pro-government Janjaweed militias blamed for atrocities in Darfur.

The crowd then smashed windows in nearby vehicles, and Egeland and aid
workers retreated to the nearby capital (Nyala) of South Darfur.

Egeland's visit comes as people displaced by Darfur's violence have
high hopes for the recent peace deal between the main rebel faction
and Sudan's government.  Two other Darfur rebel factions have not
accepted the agreement.

Fighting between rebel groups, government forces and Khartoum-backed
militias has raged in Darfur since 2003.  An estimated 180,000 people
have died in the conflict.  Millions of others have been displaced.

Sudan is under pressure to allow the United Nations to take over
peacekeeping efforts from the African Union. The government says it
will consider an international mission after the peace accord is in
place. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and
