US Restores Funding to UN Population Fund
-----------------------------------------

Among the measures in this week’s omnibus spending bill is a provision
reversing the Bush administration’s ban on funding for the UN Population
Fund. Funding ceased in 2002 with the reinstatement of the Global Gag
Rule, which restricts money for organizations that counsel, provide or
advocate for abortions. With President Obama’s signing of the spending
bill on Wednesday, the US will provide the fund with a $50 million
commitment. UN Population Fund director Thoraya Obaid hailed the new US
stance.

Thoraya Obaid: “We warmly applaud this action by President Obama. This
is a much, much needed support. It will contribute to UNFPA’s ongoing
effort to support governments to decrease maternal mortality, improve
maternal health, and prevent HIV/AIDS. Certainly, this funding will
advance the health and rights of women in all countries all around the
globe. We’re very happy to receive this money.”
