EUDORA PRO FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 4.2 - RELEASE NOTES
=====================================================

This document provides some detail on the changes that have been
made to Eudora Pro for version 4.2; it also lists new Eudora.ini
settings as wells as known issues in the software.

This document supplements the Readme.txt and Whatsnew.pdf
files, which give higher-level descriptions of the new features.

---------------
CHANGES/FIXES
---------------

STARTUP/INTERFACE

* Added protection against crashing repeatedly in situations
where, at startup, Eudora is trying to display a message that
for some reason causes it to crash. If it encounters that
problem, then no windows will be opened at startup.

* Fixed a problem where a dialog could keep coming up indefinitely
if you tried to change the name of a mailbox to something illegal
and then clicked elsewhere at the right time.

* Customizing the toolbar should now retain the specified icons.

* We modified the status bar help (hints in the lower-left margin
of the Eudora window) to New Message, Reply, Reply All, Forward,
and Redirect to reflect the new behavior with the <shift>
modifier. As a clarification, we have changed this functionality
to support Ctrl-Shift-R for Reply All.

* Tools-Options dialogs for Spell Checking, Auto-completion, and
Advanced Networks have improved field order when tabbing through
     the fields.

* There is a new Recovered status for email recovered during a
rebuild of a .toc (mailbox table of contents) file. This can
occur if you had deleted a piece of mail but had not compacted
the mailbox. If the mailbox's corresponding .toc file got
corrupted, then rebuilding it would leave the deleted mail as
recovered. It is designated with the ? symbol.

* Auto-save setting in Tools-Options-Miscellaneous is now checked
     for valid data.

* NetscapeURLDDE=0 has returned to its single use of bringing up a
separate window when clicking on a URL. If you want to vary the
control of the mailto: URL within Netscape, you can adjust it in
     Eudora's Tools/Options/Miscellaneous.

* The installer allows you to create a Eudora desktop shortcut.

* Eudora is quicker during shutdown.

* Whatever was the last current tabbed window in the foreground
will be the same tabbed window in the foreground after exit and
     restart of Eudora.

* There is a larger display for the compact mailbox button in the
lower-left corner of each mailbox. We also make sure that it
     fits within the button.

* Long label names are no longer cut off.

* Eudora now sanity-checks the MainWindowPosition setting in
Eudora.ini so that it will always display its window upon startup.

CREATE/SEND/EDITING/REPLYING/FORWARDING/REDIRECTING/VIEWING MAIL
(Note that there are related categories in Auto-completion and
Format-flowed.)

* The Shift modifier has been changed in regards to new messages,
replies, forwards, and redirects. The old way brought up a
dialog that allowed you to specify a personality and/or
stationery. We now support Shift-reply or Ctrl-Shift-r which now
corresponds to Reply All. The idea is that the new From button
allows you to change the personality on the fly. We also have
the stationery window as well as Message-New Message With-list of
stationery which allows you to easily select your stationery.

* The mail files can now safely be kept on a volume that doesn't
support long file names, such as a 16-bit Novell server.

* Fixed a crash when replying to a message with deleted headers.

* .Mbx (Eudora mailbox) files can now be attached directly to a
message without corruption. Formerly they had to be zipped, or
otherwise scrambled, in order to be received correctly.

* Eudora was modifying the names of attachments in certain cases
(such as .dot to .doc); this no longer occurs.

* Fixed a problem, when automatic addition of domain names to
addresses without @ signs was enabled, where domain names were
being added too aggressively inside nicknames.

* Fixed a problem where the headers were sometimes displayed in
     a reply to a selection.

* Now draws the excerpt bar when pasting excerpted text from one
     message into another.

* Fixed a crash when saving a message as an HTML file in the non-
     Microsoft-viewer case.

* Excerpt levels are no longer lost when replying with a selection.

* The message in the preview pane and the message highlighted in
the mailbox summary should now always be the same one.

* Attachments are found using the following progression:
     1. Original "Attachment Converted" location
     2. AutoReceiveAttachmentDirectory Eudora.ini setting
     3. Eudora's Attach directory which is specified in the Attachment
     options section (defaults to Attach).

* Fixed problem where a UUencoded attachment from Mac Eudora was
followed by a signature. This had caused problems displaying
     the message.

* By default, sending a plain-text message with a formatted
signature will now cause the formatting to be removed from the
signature. There is a check box in Tools/Options/Styled Text
that you can use to defeat this.

* Printing a message which has Message Font size set to Medium
will no longer cause Eudora to print text very large.

* Print selection is now never the default. This resolves the
issue of printing a message where only one word is selected
(i.e. from Find Messages). If you do want to only print the
selected text, then you can select Print selection from the
     Print dialog.

* Attachments which have the % encoding should be properly handled.

* Manually entering >From should now retain the > symbol.

*    &nbsp in HTML is now handled just like the more correct &npsp;

* While typing, you can use Ctrl-Space to clear the current
     formatting settings.

* We fixed the issue where some people were getting a crash while
     saving/closing a stationery.

* Multiple formatting styles are now properly handled when
replying or forwarding to a message.

* Some MAPI applications would get <x-flowed> and </x-flowed> tags
in the message. This happened if the other application used
MAPIReadMail(). Now Eudora removes the tags and flows the lines
before giving it to the MAPI client.

* A message that has a plugin associated with it where the plugin
is not present on the computer could cause a crash. This has been
     addressed.

* Out of concern for recent incidents where viruses have tried to
trick people into running malicious programs, we have changed the
wording of the dialog displayed when you click on an attachment
     to launch it.

* Queuing a message with unbalanced parentheses or group syntax
     (name:) no longer has problems.

* Sending a new message with excerpts but no other styles and a
styled signature will now get a warning dialog that you are
     sending text with styled formatting.

* We now allow you to control whether or not your signature should
be included with your response. One of these new Eudora.ini
[Settings] settings is also in Tools/Options/Replying as
"Include signature on reply." Its corresponding INI setting is
     IncludeSigReply=1 (default)

These are the others, with their default values:
     IncludeSigForward=1
     IncludeSigRedirect=0

They correspond to whether or not a signature is included when
     forwarding or redirecting a message.

* Now warning user upon queueing a message with a syntactically
     bad recipient.

* We addressed the issue where some people who had Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5 and another program (such as GetRight) saw
all incoming HTML messages displayed as raw HTML text.

* When copy/cutting and pasting from excerpted text, we no longer
add the > symbol in front of the pasted text for headers. There
are still some issues when pasting into the text body when you
have Tools/Options/Viewing Mail/Use Microsoft Viewer disabled.

* Lines starting with "from" are now handled properly when in the
     original text of a reply.

* We now handle the > symbol which Sendmail adds in front of every
line that starts with "From ". "From " in the beginning of a line
usually gets translated to ">From " while sending mail. It now
     is displayed as "From ".

* We fixed the cursor disappearing issue in regards to tabbing
down to the text body of a forwarded message.

* If you included the text "<HTML>" within your message then
it would cause some problems. It now only causes a problem when
it is at the start of a line.

* Fixed crash associated with trying to do a print preview without
     a default printer.

* There are no longer garbage characters at the end of the dialog
for canceling a new message that had a very long list in the To:
     field.

* Alt-R has been activated to toggle the From button if you have
more than just the <Dominant> personality.

* ReplyAttribution (default is something like At time, you wrote:)
is re-added before excerpted text when you are replying and you
have AlwaysExcerptResponse=0 which would cause the > symbols to
display instead of the excerpt bars for replies to messages from
     previous versions to 4.2.

* A problem with changing focus while a mailbox is open has been
addressed. This relates to selecting Tools/Options and then
     canceling out.

* When forwarding a message, we now add a blank line before the
excerpted text. This will avoid the tendency of immediately
typing and accidentally typing within the excerpted text.

* We now test whether or not an HTML message contains <iframe>s,
which can contain malicious code. This is tested unless you have
Tools/Options/Viewing Mail/Allow Executables in HTML Content
     checked.

* Focus will not be lost in a new message if you change focus to
     another application and return.

* We now support a new URL format. This x-Eudora-option format
allows you to set settings in your .INI file.
     Examples:
     <x-Eudora-option:RealName=foo>
     <x-Eudora-option:RealName=foo&section=Settings>
To use this, create a message with the URL in the body (including
the pointy brackets), click on it from your Out mailbox, and
click on the URL in the preview pane. Or, if someone emails you a
message containing one of these URLs, and if you're sure it will
do what you want, just click on the URL in the preview pane.

* Auto-save has been added; this will automatically save your new
message every X minutes. This setting can be adjusted in Tools-
     Options-Miscellaneous.

* Edit-Paste Special... has been added to allow you to paste text
into a message using various formats. This is limited to the
formats available on the Windows clipboard.

* We now pull out some of those extra spaces in the recipient
fields (To:, Cc:, Bcc:) when replying to a multiple-recipient
     email.

* The carriage returns (CR's) in text attachments that contain
CR's without trailing line feeds will not get converted to NULLs.

* Printing a new message with very long headers no longer crashes.

AUTO-COMPLETION

* Tools/Options/Auto-completion has a new option called: "Time to
wait before popping up Auto-completion box (Milliseconds)" with
     a default value of 500.

* With auto-completion, if you type a name ABC@company.com and
then another email to ABC, it will automatically fill the
@company.com which may or may not be desirable. To prevent it
from automatically filling the rest of the line, use the
     Backspace key.

* Auto-completion drop down list box adjusts its dimensions
     according to its contents.

* If a nickname is automatically expanded, then the expanded
addresses do not get added to the history list. This is
     intended behavior.

FORMAT=FLOWED

* If you want to disable this feature, please re-read the
explanation in Readme.txt again. If you STILL want to disable
it, you can do so by putting the following in the [Settings]
     section of your Eudora.ini file:
     ConvertFormatFlowedtoExcerpt=0
     InterpretFormatFlowed=0

CHECKING/FILTERING MAIL

* Make Filter now properly handles multiple addresses which were
     separated by a semicolons (;).

* The list of Labels is now enabled when selecting Make Label in
     the filters window.

* Reply with stationery no longer warns you that you are sending
     a message with styled formatting.

* A mailbox's table of contents (.toc) file should no longer be
read-only or locked while you are downloading mail. There are
some new Eudora.ini settings in the [Settings] section that are
     related:
OpenRetryCount=5 (number of times it retries)
     OpenRetryInterval=250 (in milliseconds)

* Fixed crash when you restart Eudora after leaving the filters
window open and displaying a filter without any actions.

* We addressed an issue where some people's filters looked like
they were lost. If they subsequently modified their filters and
saved the changes, then yes, their old filters are gone. The
problem was that if you had left your filters window open when
you exited and restarted Eudora, then the filters were not
displayed, giving the impression that they were gone. If you had
closed and re-opened your filters, then they would have been
OK. We have addressed this issue, so that the filters are
loaded if you had left your filters window open.

* If you have Tools/Options/Incoming Mail/Offline checked, it now
gives you a "Working Offline" dialog to [Allow this connection],
[Allow all connections], or [Cancel] when you are checking mail.

* Filters are updated and activated after saving instead of being
     activated after restarting Eudora.

* Labels in the Filter actions may be grayed out when you try to
select a Label. A workaround is to go into Tools-Options-Labels
and click on one of the label fields. Click on OK. You should
now have the labels available to you in the filter actions.

* Memory management has improved in regards to handling mail and
mailboxes especially in regards to filtering.

* Tools-Options-Background Tasks allows you to control the delay
before processing your messages. The new hot key is Ctrl-\.

*    <x-Eudora-option:NoAutoResponseHeaders> allows for better
detecting of mailing lists to which you should not auto-respond.
As a default, "errors-to:,list-" is the value. Add any other
headers which will identify it as a list (hence will not
     auto-respond via filters).

ADDRESS BOOK/DIRECTORY SERVICES

*    Fixed a crash when a name wasn't specified when creating a
     new Finger server entry.

* Expanded nickname which contained a list of names now expands
with a comma-space so that the names will wrap. This occurs
when you have Automatically expand nicknames enabled in Tools-
     Options-Miscellaneous.

FIND/FIND MESSAGES

* The menu you get when you right-click on a mailbox contains
a Find Messages selection that lets you do a search on just the
     messages in that mailbox.

* The Find Messages Results tab supports some right-click behavior
when you have multiple messages selected; the options available
are Open Message, Open Mailbox, and Delete Message.

* The Results tab supports Ctrl key selection of individual mail.

* We switched the default action for Ctrl-F. It now brings up the
new Find Messages dialog. Ctrl-Shift-F will now bring up the
old-style Find. The old-style Find will search through your
     mailbox's summary display if that is where the focus is;
otherwise, it will search through the open message that has the
focus. The new Find Messages finds messages throughout selected
     mailboxes.

As a result of the previous change, we have added an Eudora.ini
     setting in your [Settings] section:
     SwitchFindKeyAccl=1
The default setting is 0. If set to 1, then Ctrl-F will
correspond to the old Find and Ctrl-Shift-F will correspond to
     the new Find Messages.

* Find Text (Edit-Find-Find or ctrl-F) while in a mailbox summary
will allow you to search for a word in the Subject field.

PERSONALITIES

* The new From button in a new message window now lets you know
     which is the current personality.

* New personalities take defaults from DEudora.ini, if it's present.

IMAP

* Importing a Netscape IMAP account now retains the characteristic
     of being IMAP.

* IMAP no longer gives an error if you try to specify a folder
that IMAP messages are moved to on deletion that isn't directly
     off the root folder.

* Cleaned up mailbox selection popup for IMAP trash selection.

* You can now create a new mailbox/folder in IMAP personality
properties for "When I delete a message move it to:".

* Now supports searching of the parent mailbox as well as the
     child mailboxes.

* If you receive an IMAP message with an attachment, then you can
transfer the message to a POP mailbox with the attachment intact
without having to open it first.

* Transfer filters should now occur upon startup if you have
     automatic mail check.

* You can now display messages that had been sent with QP
(quoted-printable) disabled and contained some 8-bit characters.

* Fixed a crash which occurred if you had transferred a message
from your IMAP mailbox to your Out box and then tried to
     delete it.

* A persistent progress message no longer displays when you had
cancelled the password dialog after trying to add/delete an
     IMAP mailbox.

* It will now prompt you for your IMAP password even if the
     previous IMAP login had failed.

* If you remove an IMAP mailbox, it now closes the mailbox if it
was open as well. Another scenario is changing the personality
from IMAP to POP (supported by a few servers) which would cause
the entire associated mailbox tree to be removed.

* If you try to search through an empty IMAP folder, it now
suppresses the error message that you cannot select the empty
folder. The error related to searching through an empty POP
     folder still exists.

* IMAP is now able to log bytes received from the network. If you
have the Esoteric Settings plugin in your Eudora directory, then
in your Tools/Options/Logging section, check "All Bytes Received".
This setting corresponds to LogLevel=64 in Eudora.ini's [Debug]
     section.

* SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE commands have been corrected.

* IMAP messages now use <x-flowed> tags when format=flowed
     is used.

* Fixed a crash which would occur if you received a bounced message
     from certain servers.

* Trash is supported for an IMAP account. Before, you had to mark
a message for deletion and then delete it. Now, you can specify
a Trash mailbox (which you have to create) on your IMAP server
and all IMAP deletions will move the messages to this mailbox.

* Forget IMAP password will affect any of the account's open
mailboxes. It will prompt you for the password if you try to
     download a new message.

* The IMAP password is now saved if it did not previously exist.

ACAP

* Improved support for some ACAP servers. We are more in line
     with the ACAP specifications.

-------------------------
NEW EUDORA.INI SETTINGS
-------------------------

This section describes the new parameters that are available in the
[Settings] section of Eudora.ini with Eudora Pro 4.2. In each case,
the default value of setting is shown to the right of its name. If the
setting isn't present, Eudora will behave as if it's present with the
default value specified.

In the descriptions of what the settings do, "on" corresponds to a
value of 1, and "off" corresponds to a value of 0.

We don't advise that you add these settings, or change existing ones
in Eudora.ini, unless you are experienced at doing this kind of
configuration editing or are being guided by someone who is.

MaxMenus 30000
The maximum number of popup menus for mailboxes. These are equivalent
to mailbox folders (i.e. local mailbox folders that contain other
mailboxes, or IMAP mailboxes that contain other mailboxes). Used when
Eudora can't be started due to the large number of popup menus created,
which is limited by Windows. This will allow you to start up Eudora
and run it long enough to remove some mailboxes so that fewer menus
will be needed. Running for extended periods of time with this switch
in Eudora.ini is not recommended.

UsePOPCAPA 1
Whether or not Eudora should send the CAPA command to the POP server.
Used only to see if the server supports the MANGLE command modifier.
See UsePOPMangle.

UsePOPMangle 0
Whether or not Eudora should use the MANGLE modifier to the TOP command
in a POP connection. MANGLE can produce some better results for
messages that are skipped because they are large, giving a summary for
the attachments in the message.

FontSizeTableSmallest 7,8,9,10,12,16,24
FontSizeTableTableSmall 7,9,10,12,16,22,28
FontSizeTableMedium 8,10,11,14,18,24,36
FontSizeTableLarge 10,12,14,16,20,26,42
FontSizeTableLargest 11,14,16,18,22,28,48
Font sizes used for displaying text in the built-in (non-Microsoft)
viewer. They correspond to the size schemes in the Fonts category of
the Options dialog. The seven values in each list correspond to the
Very Small, Small, Medium, Large, Larger, Very Large, and Humongous
sizes that you can specify in a message composition window.

SwitchFindKeyAccl 0
If on, then Ctrl-F will open the Find Text window, and Ctrl-Shift-F
will open the Find Message window. By default it's the other way
around.

NoAutoResponseHeaders errors-to:,list-
Headers that begin with any of the specified prefixes in the
comma-separated list will cause a message not to be automatically
responded to by a filter action. These should be headers that identify
the message as coming from a mailing list, in which case automatically
responding would be bad.

WholeSummaryLabelColor 1
When on, the entire summary of a message that has a label is drawn in
that label's color. When off, only the text in the Label column is
displayed in the label's color.

IncludeSigForward 1
IncludeSigRedirect 0
IncludeSigReply 1
Whether or not the default signature should be included in the given
response

SmtpAuthAllowed 0
Whether or not Eudora should try to authenticate the user when sending
a message to the SMTP server. Not all SMTP servers support the AUTH
command.

FilterTransferName 0
This controls how mailbox names should be displayed in the button that
indicates which mailbox is the target of a Transfer or Copy filter
action. 0 is the mailbox name only. 1 is the full path of each mail
folder and the mailbox name. 2 is the full path to the filename of the
mailbox. 3 is just the parent mail folder and the mailbox name.

PreviewHeaders To:,Subject:,Cc:
List of comma-separated header prefixes for the headers that should
show for messages in the preview pane.

EditAllHeaders 0
If on, then the From: and Attach: headers may be directly edited in
composition messages.

AllowOverwriteMode 1
If off, then the composition messages can never be put in to overwrite
mode (where typing a key doesn't insert a character, but
instead replaces the character just to the right of the insertion
point).

UseQuickTime 1
If off, then Eudora will never attempt to use QuickTime to display
images. Useful for situations where QuickTime is causing instability
in the system.

TypeToSelectSubject 0
When on, typing characters in the summaries of a mailbox window will
attempt to match words in the Subject field.

--------------
KNOWN ISSUES
--------------

* Eudora cannot import messages or address book entries from
Outlook Express 5, except for ones that were generated using
Outlook Express 4 prior to an upgrade to version 5.

* If you have Use Microsoft's Viewer checked in the Viewing Mail
panel of the Options dialog and you change the message font size
in the Fonts panel of the Options dialog, then that new font size
will also take effect in web pages that you view with Internet
Explorer. Internet Explorer uses a single font size scheme
for both viewing email in Eudora and viewing web pages, so when
Eudora asks IE to change its font size, the change applies to web
     browsing as well.

* You may not see "Send To" in the File menu of Microsoft Office 97
applications (e.g. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) even though you
have enabled Eudora's MAPI support via Tools/Options/MAPI. In
order to take advantage of Eudora's MAPI support, you need to
make sure the Win.ini file in yours Windows directory has a
[Mail] section and that it contains the following settings:

     MAPI=1
     MAPIX=1

Please do NOT attempt to make this change if you are not
experienced at editing Windows configuration files or are being
     guided by someone who is.

* When Eudora's MAPI support is enabled, as described in the
preceding issue, File/Send To/Distribution List in Office 97
applications should bring up Eudora's address list in the
Office 97 application. This fails on some systems if Eudora
     isn't already running.

* Running Eudora on a Windows 95/98 system with your mail files
on a Windows NT system may cause problems. Other applications
appear to have trouble in that configuration as well.
