This is the info I have so far...

How can I connect my Macintosh to the campus network using SLIP
(Serial Line Internet Protocol)?

Summary:

To use SLIP from a Macintosh, you will need these four pieces:

  (1) MacTCP software on your Macintosh.
  (2) A modem or other physical link (such as a leased line)
      to your workstation on campus.
  (3) SLIP software for your Macintosh. There are currently at least
three low-cost (~$50) commercial software packages available.
  (4) SLIP server software for your workstation on campus, available
      from some anonymous ftp sites.

Response:

To use SLIP from a Macintosh, you'll need the following.

  (1) A properly installed copy of MacTCP on your remote Macintosh.

  (2) A modem (or other physical link to your workstation on campus, such
as a leased line) for your remote Macintosh. If you are using a modem,
you'll also need a compatible modem on the workstation end.

  (3) SLIP software. There are at least three commercial SLIP packages
for the Macintosh available. These add the SLIP LAP (link access protocol)
to MacTCP, and typically consist of a SLIP LAP file and one or more
control panel files and/or application programs that are used to configure
the SLIP connection. After installing one of these software packages,
you then select the access protocol in the MacTCP control panel:

    (a) VersaTilities ($47.50 educational discount price, $99.00 list
price in single quantities). Includes other TCP/IP tools,
including an FTP client and server and a time synchronization server.

(The VersaTilities package, including SLIP support, is also
bundled with the latest versions of the VersaTerm and
VersaTerm-PRO terminal emulation applications. The educational
discount price for VersaTerm 4.6.2 or later [the first version
to include SLIP support] is $50, with a list price of $149.)

  (4) A SLIP server for your UNIX workstation. There is currently
no central support for SLIP access to campus computers, so you will
to set up the SLIP server on your own UNIX system. In addition, we do
not yet have much experience with doing this, so you are pretty much on
your own for now.

Some possible sources for this software are listed below. (These
anonymous ftp addresses have not been verified.)

The best way to start out is to check out:

Anonymoug ftp to ftp.bio.indiana.edu, directory util/slip/ for:

-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 38679 May 7 21:19 100149-03.tar.Z
-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 271573 May 7 21:19 cslipbeta.tar.Z
-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 102751 May 24 16:44 csn-slip-package.tar.Z
-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 1365 May 30 13:57 free-slip-and-ppp
-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 8504 May 30 13:56 macslip.review
-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 6089 May 30 13:57 slip.server.howto
-rw-r--r-- 1 gilbertd staff 758593 May 7 21:29 slipware.tar.Z

The "slip.server.howto" file is especially helpful.

Other UNIX SLIP software sources include:

ftp.ee.lbl.gov:cslipbeta.tar.Z
header-compressed SLIP for Suns and perhaps other stuff

icarus.riacs.edu:pub/slip/*
various SLIP stuff for Suns and others

tut.cis.ohio-state.edu:pub/ppp/ppp-sparc4.1.tar.Z
STREAMS-based header-compressed PPP [Point to Point Protocol]
        for SunOS 4

ftp.uu.net:networking/ip/slip/sun/...
   102751 Aug 22 1991 csn-slip-package.tar.Z < contains slip-4.1
    26148 Oct 31 1989 slip-4.0.tar.Z < useable, see also cslip version
[as well as SLIP support for additional hardware in networking/ip/slip]

ftp.uu.net:networking/ip/slip/cslip/...
   271573 Apr 3 1990 cslipbeta.tar.Z < usable, slip-4.1 may be better

According to Steve Dorner:
"The Morningstar manual for their PPP/SLIP software is available
freely for ftp at morningstar.com. It contains information I needed
to set up a slip server that I could not find in any of the free
 SLIP packages."
 See morningstar.com:/pub/ppp/ppp-1.3-doc.shar.Z
                        and /pub/ppp/Free-SLIP-and-PPP

Hope it helps...---
