subtitle this one: Apple wakes up and smells the Internet!
---------------------------------------------
Announcing the availablity of Apple Software Updates on the Internet. We
(Apple Computer Technical Support) are now providing a mirror image of the
software available on AppleLink and E-World (the Apple SW Updates board) on
the Internet. Since we maintain both archives the software will be
consistently kept up to date. So if you need the latest NSI disk or any
Apple Software you now have an Internet host from which you can easily get
it. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Since this is a real mirror copy of the archive on AppleLink you may
encounter some interesting directory and file names. To get around these
intersting names simply use quotes ("") to encapsulate the path. You may
also run into another problem with non-printable (>ascii 127) characters in
filenames. Use mget Mac* to retrieve a file that starts with Mac and also
contains non-printable and thus non-typeable characters. The process of
getting these files to an Internet based ftp server is automated and as
such some trade offs had to be made. Macintosh users using an ftp
application such as Fetch can see and download all files without any
trouble. It only becomes a problem when you attempt to retrieve files via
an intermediate UNIX based host. I did some testing using a Sun Sparc 10
to retrieve files from the server and it went very well.

You can login using anonymous ftp or use Gopher. The server is
ftp.support.apple.com (130.43.6.3). Stay tuned, we should have a Mosaic
server up within the next few weeks.

Kevin
