Submission Guidelines University of Michigan Macintosh Archives mac.archive.umich.edu welcomes all submissions. We encourage everyone to make files available to the Internet, but we would like you to be aware of our upload policy. You may also be interested in reading archivepolicy.txt, which can be found in the same directory as this file. The best way to submit a file to mac.archive.umich.edu is to put it directly into the directory /mac/incoming using ftp. After doing this, please drop us a note at comments@mac.archive.umich.edu so we know where the file came from. If you mail a BinHexed file to macgifts@mac.archive.umich.edu, not only do we get a copy, but a copies are also forwarded to sumex.stanford.edu, comp.binaries.mac, and a half-dozen other sites. Please include some sort of descriptive header at the head of any message sent to the macgifts address. If you submit a file via macgifts, you don't need to also leave a copy in the incoming folder. If for some reason you need to submit a file by mail but you do NOT want it forwarded to other sites, you can send it to submissions@mac.archive.umich.edu. If none of these submission methods are feasable for you, contact us and we'll try to work something out. With increasing frequency, people seem to be trying to upload files to us via our mirror sites. Just as you cannot comb your hair by sticking your hand through the wall, archive mirrors are also one-way-only. Sorry. These days, we're very space-conscious. We recommend using either Compact Pro version 1.51 or one of the StuffIt family of products, currently at version 3.5. These programs are widely accepted and provide much better compression ratios than earlier formats. We hate to see DiskDoubler files. DiskDoubler, AutoDoubler, and their relatives have their place, but none are widely enough used to be appreciated as a means of distributing files on the Net. If getting your submission in either StuffIt 3.5 or Compact Pro format would create undue hardship (like if you're working with a 2400 bps modem as I still am), give us whatever you have, and we'll take care of it. However, there may be significant delays in archiving files not submitted in StuffIt 3.5 or Compact Pro 1.51 format. Except in rare circumstances, we do not archive self-extracting (.sea) archives. Self-extracting archives take up an unnecessary amount of space and can be used to transmit viruses. If you submit a self-extracting archive, we WILL convert it to its non-self-extracting counterpart. You are warned. Similarly, we do not archive files that are compressed more than once (file.sit.sit.hqx, for example). All such files will be immediately rejected with a note to the submitter encouraging resubmission as a singly-compressed archive. We believe that everyone has something better to do with their time than download software that doesn't work (or worse), so mac.archive won't accept anything that crashes a System 7.x Macintosh. One other word about submissions: Be careful about licensing and copyrights. Since we generally don't accept sounds, images, or QuickTime movies ('useful' artwork like PostScript maps are most welcome, however), we avoid many of these copyright nightmares outright. If you upload something that looks like it might be a violation of copyright, it will be deleted. If you left an e-mail address, we'll tell you why we can't accept it. We thrive on submissions. We would perish without them. If you see something we don't have, please submit it. The Macintosh Internet community has expressed great interest in obtaining new files from the pay services like AOL and CompuServe. If you're a member of one of these, we would appreciate a copy of something new and exciting that you've downloaded. The Net will thank you.
