Leona's Entrance and Winning Poses IX. Closing and Credits I. Why Leona? I decided to do this FAQ on Leona, because there's not many FAQ's for her. But anyways, Leona is your all around character with good speed and reach. What makes her so great though, is her power and variety of moves. She also has great offense and defense, in which you can catch the opponent off guard. So, read on if you want to learn more about using Leona. II. Leona's Bio and Info Fighting Style: Martial Arts & Heidern's Assassination Technqiues Birthdate: January 10 Age: 18 Country: Unknown Blood Type: B Height: 176cm Weight: 66kg Hobbies: Casing factories Favorite Food: Vegetables Mastered Sport: Nothing in particular Prized Things: Nothing in particular Dislikes: Blood Seiyuu/Voice Actress: Masae Yumi First Appearance: The King of Fighters '96 Other Game Appearances: The King of Fighters '97-2000, The King of Fighters Kyo, The King of Fighters R1-R2, Gals Fighters, SNK vs. Capcom "Match of the Millennium", SNK vs. Capcom "CardFighter's Clash" SNK Card Set Ikari Team Members: KoF'94: Heidern, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel KoF'95: Heidern, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel KoF'96: Leona, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel KoF'97: Leona/Riot of the Blood Leona, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel KoF'98: Leona, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel KoF'99: Leona, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel, Whip KoF'00: Leona, Ralf Jones, Clark Steel, Whip Ikari Team Background Music: KoF'94: ???? She seemed to want vengence on the one who killed her family. The Ikari Team reached the man who Leona thought killed her family. The man's called himself Goenitz, and told Leona it was herself that killed her family. Goenitz also said that see was of Orochi Blood and was destined to awaken again. Then, Goenitz had vanished. Not knowing what destiny had in store for Leona, a year flew by. In 1997, KoF'97 was held, but strange things begun happening. This awakening Goenitz spoke of begun, as Leona and Iori Yagami started to go insane, due to their cursed Orochi Blood and not to mention the coming of Orochi, they couldn't control themselves. The Riot of the Blood had begun, in which they were hunched over while throwing up blood and growling like animals. Both were out for blood, but were stopped. After the tournament, Orochi was sealed away. But, Leona thinks back to what Goenitz had said about being of Orochi Blood. She feels the only way to not harm people close to her when she Riots, is by killing herself. As she attempts to kill herself by using the hairband blade from her hair, Ralf stops her. He tells her that she was once alone but now she has them. She then remembers what her father had said, that she can make her own destiny. Feeling good about her future, she put the past behind and continuted living on. In 1999, another KoF Tournamnet took place, but the rules changed since a new host was running the tournamnet. It was 4 on 4 this year, with a new Striker System, where a partner could come in the battle and help your teamates a certain amount of times. The 4th person for the Ikari Team was a young girl like Leona. She called herself Whip. At the end of the tournament, the team found themselves waiting to see when the Nest Cartel were to make their next move. In the year 2000, Heidern had come up with a plan with a friend and comrade named Ling. They were going to take over the KoF Tournamnet this year. So the Ikari Team goes to investigate the KoF2000 Tournament, to see what The Nest Cartel's next move will be. III. This command will only work if hit by basic attacks, special attacks, DM's, and SDM's that knock ya on to the ground. Throw Escape- any button when grabbed This does not work in the air, against Benimaru, Mai, Athena, Yuri, Clark, and Leona, since they all have air throws. GROUND ONLY! Knockdown Attack- CD (air) If hit by this attack, the opponent will hit the ground. Think of this as a Fierce Attack. Not even the falling recovery roll will work after being hit by the Knockdown Attack. Emergency Attack Avoidance Forward/Back- AB, f + AB, b + AB Just like in KoF'98, using this command will enable your character to AVOID an attack from the opponent. Your character is INVINCIBLE for that breif moment of rolling. Remember though, you can be thrown or hit after the roll. Guard Escape Roll Forward/Back- when blocking, AB, f + AB, b + AB (requires 1 stock of the Power Gauge) When blocking an attack, your character will roll forward or back from the opponent. This move can be used to distance yourself, if being pressure attacked. Guard Knockdown Attack- when blocking, CD (requires 1 stock of the Power Gauge) When blocking an attack, your character will perform the CD Attack, which will knock the opponent away from you. The only problem with the attack is that it does no damage to the opponent. Great to distance yourself from the opponent though. Striker Call- BC (requires 1 Striker Bomb) A Striker is the 4th character of the team, which is assigned to HELP/AID your character in the fight. Strikers play a big part in battle. Each Striker has a different ability to help the character. Unlike in KoF'99, where you could only call out your striker when on the ground. The striker system has changed, so that you can call out the striker when in the air, knocked down, after DM's, attacking, or getting attacked. You are limited 3-5 striker bombs pre match. Striker Replenish- Start (requires 1 stock of the Power Gauge) Another new addition to KoF2000, in which you can get your Striker Bombs back. If you have a stock on your Power Gauge, you will replace your stock with a Striker Bomb. Only use if needed. Counter Mode- ABC (consumes all 3 stocks of the Power Gauge) When activated, the opponent will fall to the ground and your character will start to flash RED for at least 20 seconds. Once Counter Mode wears off, the Power Gauge won't come back for another 10 seconds. In Counter Mode, this is what it has to offer..... -Attacks inflict more damage. -You can use DM's all ya want. -You can use Guard Escape Rolling Forward/Back and Guard Knockdown Attack all ya want. -Can supercancel basic and special moves into DM's. -Some DM's come out faster than other DM's. Armor Mode- BCD (consumes all 3 stocks of the Power Gauge) When activated, your character will start to flash YELLOW for 10 seconds. Once Armor Mode wears off your Power Gauge won't come back for another 10 seconds. You can't perform DM's in Armor Mode. In Armor Mode, this is what it has to offer..... -Attacks inflict more damage. -You have Super Armor. -Take no Block damage while blocking special moves, and DM/SDM's. -You can use Guard Escape Rolling Forward/Back and Guard Knockdown Attack all ya want. -Can't be knocked down from most attacks. Desperation Moves & Super Desperation Moves- DM's and SDM's are your Super Moves. In order to use DM/SDM's, you must fill up the Power Gauge to stock a DM. You can store up to 3 stocks. Only certain DM's can be SDM's. SDM's take 3 stocks to use and must be done by presing 2 buttons, instead of one button. IV. Leona's Basic Moves A (weak punch): standing- Knife Hand Slash which reaches forward and hits high. Comes out quick. crouching- Low Knife Hand Slash which comes out quick. Can be canceled into Moon Slasher. jumping- Elbow Drop which is quick, but not much use for it. diagonal jumping- Descending Knife Hand Slash. Decent jump-in combo atarter which can be linked into close C/D. close- Backhand Slash which hits high and comes out quick. you can link up to 3 close A's. B (weak kick): standing- Snapping Side Kick which comes out fast and hits high. Decent poke attack. crouching- Low Snapping Side Kick which comes out fast. Not much use for it. jumping- 45 Degree Angle Upside Down Kick which comes out fast and can be linked into close C/D. Can be canceled into X Calibur and supercanceled into DM/SDM V Slasher. diagonal jumping- Jumping Snap Kick which comes out fast and can be linked into close C/D. Can be canceled into X Calibur and supercanceled into DM/SDM V Slasher. close- Turning Heel Kick which comes out fast and can be comboed into close A. C (strong punch): standing- Leona moves herself forward while doing a Knife Hand Slash. Comes out slow and hits high. crouching- Rising Elbow which come out fast and can be canceled into Moon Slasher or Strike Arc. jumping- Overhead X Slice. Leona's hands are in an X formation when she hits ya. Can link up close A/B after jumping C. diagonal jumping- Diving X Slice. Same as above, but can link up with another diagonal jumping C/D. This move is also her cross-up. close- An AUTO 2-hit Uppercut Slash which comes out fast and can be canceled on the first hit into Strike Arch. D (strong kick): standing- Hopping Forward Roundhouse Kick which comes out fast and hits high. A great poke attack too. crouching- Sweep Kick which comes out fast and has good priority. jumping- Backwards Heel Kick which comes out fast and can be linked into close A/B. Can be canceled into X Calibur and supercanceled into DM/SDM V Slasher. diagonal jumping- Drop Kick which comes out fast and can be linked into close A/B/C/D. You can also do another diagonal jumping C/D. Can be canceled into X Calibur and supercanceled into DM/SDM V Slasher. close- Leona hits you with 2 Knee Attacks. An AUTO 2-hit which comes out fast and can be canceled on the first hit with Strike Arch or Earring Bakudan 2 Heart Attack. AB (Emergency Attack Avoidance Forward/Back) Leona will do a sliding dash forward or a roll backwards to avoid the attack. Very Fast and Invincible at the start up of the move. CD (Knockdown Attack) On the ground, Leona does a Forward Elbow Attack. In the air, Leona does a Forward Kick with her boot flashing orange and white. This move is best used in the air. It's safer and will score you some hits over the opponent. Great jump-in too. V. Leona's Special Moves -Throws Leona Crush- when close, f or b + C Ordeal Buckler- when close, f or b + D Heidern Inferno- when close in the air, f or b + C/D -Command Moves Strike Arch- f or b + B -Special Moves Baltic Launcher- charge b, f + A/C Earring Bakudan 1- qcb + B/D Earring Bakudan 2 Heart Attack- rdp + B/D >Kibaku- rdp + B/D (follow up after Heart Attack) Ground Saber- charge b, f + B/D >Gliding Buster- f + D (follow up after D Ground Saber) Moon Slasher- d, u + A/C X Calibur- in air, qcb + A/C Taunt- Start -Desperation Moves Grateful Dead- qcf, qcf + A/C Rebel Spark- qcb, hcf + B/D V Slasher- in air, qcf, hcb + A/C SDM V Slasher- in air, qcf, hcb + AC -Striker Actions Striker Attack- Killer Touch Striker Replenish- Start Another Striker- Goenitz Move Descriptions: Leona Crush- when close, f or b + C Leona stabs the opponent in the chest with her hand , then pulls back her hand from the chest of the opponent. Ordeal Buckler- when close, f or b + D Leona grabs the opponents head with both hands, then tosses him/her to the other side of the screen. The best throw to distance yourself. Heidern Inferno- when close in the air, f or b + C/D Leona kicks up the opponent vertically, then falls down on him/her while letting out a kick that sends the opponent flying forward. The throw take up full screen. Also, the throw can't be escaped, since it's an air throw. Strike Arch- f or b + B Leona does a jumping axe kick. Strike Arch can only be canceled if comboed into, if not, Strike Arch will simply knockdown the opponent. Strike Arch can only cancel with B X Calibur if in the corner, but Strike Arch has to be comboed into before X Calibur can be canceled. Strike Arch can be Supercanceled with DM/SDM V Slasher, but Strike Arch must be comboed into before V Slasher can be supercanceled. Baltic Launcher- charge b, f + A/C Leona makes a Green Orb with blades appear in front of her. When Leona performs the A Baltic Launcher, she'll stand in one place well she summons the Green Orb in front of herself. When Leona performs the C Baltic Launcher, she'll do a leaping jump forward while summoning the green orb. The A Version will do 6-hits, well the C Version does 12-hits. Earring Bakudan 1- qcb + B/D Leona will take an earring from her ear and toss it at the opponent, in which the earring explodes on impact. You can change the arc with the Heart Attack Command (rdp + B/D). If you use the B Heart Attack, the arc on the earring will bounce off the ground to the opponent. Now, if you use the D Heart Attack, the arc on the earring will hit towards the opponents legs. The earring toss goes full screen. It's a decent anti-air attack if the opponent jumps right towards ya. This move can be supercanceled off DM/SDM's. At times, you can follow up Special Moves and Strikers, but only in the corner. In Counter Mode, Earring Bakudan 1 can be supercanceled. Earring Bakudan 2 Heart Attack- rdp + B/D Leona will attach her earring to the opponent. As the earring begins to blink on the opponent for 3 seconds, it will then explode. If hit by the opponent, the earring will be removed. Also, the opponent cannot block if the earring is attached. Meaning, you can attack the opponent as much as you want before the earring explodes. This move can be comboed from the first hit of close D or Earring Bakudan 1 in the corner. >Kibaku- rdp + B/D (follow up after Heart Attack) Leona can manually explode Heart Attack, while she detonates the earring with a trigger in her hand. The only bad thing about this move would have to be the slowness from the pose she does to activate the explosion. The only time I use this move is after her CD Attack(Knockdown Attack). It's safe and will combo from the CD Attack. Ground Saber- charge b, f + B/D Leona dashes towards the opponent, when close enough, she'll release a Blue Slash from her hand. Comes out fast. The B Version can go half screen, while The D Version can go full screen. You can also combo off this move if in the corner with Special Moves. In Counter Mode, you can supercancel Grateful Dead, but only in the corner. >Gliding Buster- f + D (follow up after D Ground Saber) After hitting D Ground Saber, Leona will do a somersault kick straight up in the air, while releasing a Blue Slash from her leg. If the opponent is in air, Leona will do 2-hits instead of 1-hit. In Counter Mode, you can supercancel V Slasher immediately after Gliding Buster. Moon Slasher- charge d, u + A/C Leona will form a circular Blue Slash generated from waving her hands around. The A Version, Leona stays in place when the slash comes out, but The C Version, Leona moves herself forward while slashing. A great anti-air attack with great speed. In Counter Mode, you can supercancel Grateful Dead, but only in corner. X Calibur- in air, qcb + A/C Leona will cross her arms in an X formation, then expanding her arms out with a Blue X Slash from her hands. Comes out slow, but good none the less. Another thing about this move is how you can cancel a jumping B/D into X Calibur. It won't connect though, but a good supurise move to catch your opponent off guard. In Counter Mode, you can supercancel V Slasher immediatly after X Calibur. Taunt- Start Leona turns away from her opponent, then starts to tighten her gloves while saying, "Nigeru no yo!" (Run away!") Grateful Dead- qcf, qcf + A/C Leona does a giant flip towards the opponent, still in air grabs their head and lands behind him/her. She then grabs the opponents face or head, while she's sucking the life out of him/her. The range the DM goes is full screen. This DM is good in Counter Mode too. Rebel Spark- qcb, hcf + B/D Leona dashes torwards the opponent, if she hits, she'll plant a bomb on the opponent. As the sparks start coming out from the back of the opponent, Leona will do a pose and the bomb on the opponent explodes. Not much use for this DM in Counter Mode. V Slasher- in air, qcf, hcb + A/C SDM V Slasher- in air, qcf, hcb + AC Leona will descend from the air with slashing the opponent, then she'll ascend back to the air with another slash which forms a V and causes an explosion to the opponent. The SDM V Slasher is the same, just with a larger explosion. Both come out very fast. You can also cancel close D and jumping B/D into DM/SDM V Slasher. This DM plays a BIG PART in Leona's combos in Counter Mode. Great damage too. Striker Attack: Killer Touch - BC (requires 1 Striker Bomb) Leona dashes from the edge of the screen. If her dash hits, she'll then puts a bomb on the opponent and dashes behind him/her while the bomb explodes. This sends your opponent flying in the air and sets you up for a combo. Striker Replenish- Start (requires 1 stock of the Power Gauge) If you have 1 stock to use for a Striker Bomb, press Start. Leona will perform her taunt and gives yourself a Striker Bomb. Use wisely, because you can't cancel out of a taunt like the previous KoF's. Another Striker: Goenitz - BC (requires 1 Striker Bomb) Another Striker is a new addition to KoF2000. Each character has Another Striker besides themselves. So if ya pick Leona as your 4th person, you have to decide will it be Leona or Goenitz as your Striker? So your choice is Goenitz. Goenitz will appear on the screen and perform his Yonokaze (Four Winds), which he throws out his tornado attack and juggles you in the air. After he's done, he'll simply disappear. Who is Goenitz? Goenitz made his appearance as a boss character in The King of Fighters '96 Tournament. His role of being one of the 4 Heavenly Kings of Orochi, in which he tries to awaken The God, Orochi. He also has the power to control the winds. Goenitz has done a lot of things over the years. He killed Chizuru's sister 15 years ago, who was the protector of the Orochi Power, which caused the seal to break on the Orochi Power. He awoke Leona's Orochi Blood, which caused her to go into Riot of the Blood and murder her parents. He took Rugal Bernstein's right eye and gave him some Orochi Power, which led to Rugal's death in 1995. But in 1996, Goenitz was defeated by Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, as Chizuru Kagura had seal the Orochi Power. Nothing has been heard about Goenitz since then. It seems that Goenitz had died, but he did get his wish as Orochi had awakened in 1997. In the end, Orochi had been Sealed away once more. I'll tell ya what, Goenitz will always remain one of my favorite bosses of all time in a fighting game. VI.
