Introduction The first installment of the new Need For Speed games is very different from its predecessors. Don't expect to see exotic cars like McLarens, Ferraris, or Porsches, and beautiful closed tracks in this game, but expect racing in city streets at after hours with urban cars from manufacturers like Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, and many more. Welcome to underground street racing, Need For Speed style... I.1 Before You Go Ahead This FAQ is based on the Gamecube version of NFS:U, but it is basically the same as the other consoles except for the online features of the PC and PS2 versions, and the GameBoy Advance version of the game. Also, I will refer to the E-Brake as the Handbrake throughout the whole FAQ since I'm more comfortable with it... :P I.2 Features (Taken from the official Need For Speed website) -Feel speed like never before. Graphics that obliterate the envelope and turbocharged physics make this the fastest gameplay experience ever. -Choose from 20 elite licensed tuner cars from Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, and more. -Fully customize your car with hundreds of aftermarket parts from top-name manufacturers. Change your car's appearance to fit your personality, change its performance to fit your driving style. -Huge, highly detailed environments push your gaming hardware to the absolute limit as you battle to own the streets in your urban street machine. -Race hard and win upgrades, including weight reduction kits, turbo, suspension kits, tires, wheels, and nitrous. -Set the asphalt ablaze in a variety of game modes including Drift, Drag, and Circuit. -Go underground and become the ultimate street racer in the epic Story mode. -Build your ideal car, take it online, and take on the world's fastest competition. (PS2 and PC only) ______________________________________________________________________________ II. Version History Version 0.3? (Started 5:52 PM 3/10/2005, Finished on 11:56 AM 8/26/2005) -First release, and it took me a long while to finish this version, albeit some portions are missing... -Underground Events: Less than 10% completion, or probably less. -Visual Upgrades up until Level 3. Reputation points are under construction. -Rim sizes in the works. -Submissions are also welcome for online features, since I only have the Gamecube version. -Overall, this guide is pretty much like a used car that needs a whole lot of work... ______________________________________________________________________________ III. Game Modes Overview Go Underground: Play through this "story mode" of the game to unlock rewards such as new tracks, parts, and cars. You build an urban street machine and race it against the top racers around the city. Win races to unlock new cars and new parts and become the ultimate street racer. ______________________________________________________________________________ V. Bonus Cars Here is a list of all the bonus cars that are unlockable in NFS:U. These cars are obtained through number of style points and cannot be customized, or used in Underground Mode. These cars have unique vinyls and different parts equipped on them. Nismo Sentra (Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V) - Style Points Reward #12 VORTEX Car (Acura Integra Type R) - Style Points Reward # 4 Eddie's Nissan Skyline (Nissan Skyline R34 GTR) - Style Points Reward #114 Melissa's Nissan 350Z (Nissan 350Z) - Style Points Reward # 113 Samantha's Honda Civic (Honda Civic) - Style Points Reward # 111 Junkman's Honda Civic (Honda Civic) - Style Points Reward # 112 Petey Pablo Car (Mitsubishi Eclipse) - Style Points Reward # 31 Mystikal Car (Toyota Celica) - Style Points Reward # 40 lostprophets Car (Nissan Skyline R34 GTR) - Style Points Reward # 94 Note: If you'll count your current Underground car, then it's the only "bonus" car that you'll be able to customize in Go Underground, unless you saved after the last Challenge (Legend of the Street, No. 112/111) ______________________________________________________________________________ VII. Go Underground Mode This is the story mode of Need For Speed: Underground. The object in this mode is to build an urban street machine, race it against others around the city, and earn new upgrades for your car's looks and performance. You'll meet racers that will be tough to beat, and you'll also find people who will help you out. VII.1 Walkthrough The format throughout this section is as follows: No. of Challenge Name of Challenge Message Sender Type of Race and Name of Track (Laps) The Low-Down Opponent Name (Opponent's Car) Traffic Money won from Easy/Medium/Hard difficulty selection Rewards Tips Note: The Challenge Numbers that I have assigned are in the order of left to right of the available selections on the Race Map. I will also say if the next set of challenges can be played in any order. ==================== Event No. 0/111 ==================== Starting Challenge "Welcome to Underground Mode! Your racing career starts here. Take on the toughest drivers on the street and prove you are the ultimate racer. Winners earn cool unlocks and upgrades. Losers go home." A cutscene will then start, and the loading screen will have whatever controls you have assigned it. You will be using a car called the VORTEX Car. This is the only race in Go Underground in which you are able to use a bonus car. This car looks like it has Level 1 upgrades on it, including nitrous. The race is on Olympic Square, with only 2 laps with some traffic. Learn the ropes of racing in Underground Mode in this Challenge. When you finish in first, a cutscene will start, introducing you to Samantha, who will help you out with her unique Visual parts later on. You will then be taken to a car selection screen. Your choices are between a Volkswagen Golf, a Honda Civic, a Peugeot 206, a Mazda Miata, and a Dodge Neon. So, with only 10,000 bucks on you and 5 choices, which should you pick? Volkswagen Golf (price: 8000) Honda Civic (price: 10,000) Peugeot 206 (price: 8500) Mazda Miata MX-5 (price: 9500) Dodge Neon (price: 8500) I'd prefer you pick the Mazda Miata. With its good Handling and its moderate Top Speed ratings, it's a good choice for Circuit, Sprint, and Drift races. The Dodge Neon isn't a bad choice either. When you pick your car (I hope you have a Miata on you by now), "Ouch, that is seriously weak, dude." Another cutscene will start, and Samantha will point out Eddie, who is the best racer around the city with his Skyline, and you will also see Melissa, who is standing right beside Eddie. Samantha explains the simple rules of Underground Mode: You win races, you get cool parts. You lose, and you're out. Keep in mind though that you get a message saying that you need to try again when you lose a race, or you can simply restart as many times as you wish. You'll be taken to the Race Map screen, where Samantha will explain what that screen is for. Go back out and go to Customize Car. Samantha will explain this screen and any other subsequent screens that you have not visited yet. With only a few bucks, you'll be only able to buy at least one thing from the Visual parts section. You'll unlock the rest when winning races and earning Style Points both in Underground Mode and Quick Race Mode (preferably Drift on Drift Track 1). Go back to the Race Map screen when you're done visiting and listening to Samantha's information about the different features in Underground. The next 5 races can be played in any order. Note: Challenges from racers may have an audio message played in the background. They will talk crap about you being new and they'll brag about them beating you easily. It can be sometimes annoying, but hopefully you'll be able to beat that racer. If a challenge will only appear after beating one, it will be separated with lines like these: --------------------------. Otherwise, I will say if the next set of challenges can be played in any order. ==================== ==================== Event No. 1/111 ==================== Jose's Got Your Back From: Jose Circuit Race at Olympic Square (2 Laps) The Low-Down: Your first step towards earning some respect. Beat Jose and two others in two laps at Olympic Square. *Opponents to be added* Traffic: None Easy/Medium/Hard 375/500/625 Rewards: None Strategy: Jose (who's in the silver Golf GTI) shouldn't give you that much trouble even on Hard. Just race like you normally would for a racing game (I'm assuming a "clean" style), and you'll win first place. ==================== Event No. 2/111 ==================== Last One There's A Rotten Egg From: None Sprint Race at Liberty Gardens The Low-Down: Race through the downtown core. First one past the airport construction zone takes home the Bank. *Opponents to be added* Traffic: None Easy/Medium/Hard 375/500/625 Rewards: None ==================== Event No. 3/111 ==================== It's All About Style And Finesse From: Dirt Drift Race at Drift Track 1 (4 Laps) The Low-Down: Wow the crowds with speed and style. Put up big points to get mad props and big Bank. Dirt (240SX), Carl (Miata), Carla (Lancer) Easy/Medium/Hard 375/500/625 Rewards: Drift Track 1 Tips: Try to keep some tires in the outer lanes for Bonus Zone points. This bonus is also added to your Style Points. Strategy on Hard: It's best if you have a Miata on you if you plan on taking this event on Hard. Having the highest Handling ratings out of the first available cars plus a decent Acceleration rating, this car is ideal for the early Drift races in Go Underground. Oh, and did I forget to mention that this car is a rear-wheel drive? ==================== Event No. 4/111 ==================== The Perfect Shift From: Klutch Drag Race at 14th and Vine - Reverse The Low-Down: Four cars, four lanes. This is how drag races go down, Underground style! Show Klutch you got skills! Klutch (Neon), Carl (Miata), Daryl (Golf GTI) Traffic: None Easy/Medium/Hard 375/500/625 Rewards: 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES 14th and Vine Drag Track - Reverse Tips: Shift when the needle turns green or when you see a green light on the top of your screen to receive a boost and a Perfect Shift message. At the start, try to keep your needle on the point where the needle turns green. ==================== Event No. 5/111 ==================== Last Place Is A Bad Place To Be From: None Lap Knockout (Circuit) Race at Olympic Square - Reverse The Low-Down: The pressure's on! Last man standing wins this Lap Knockout around Olympic Square. Priss (Lancer), Wart (206), Rosie (Golf GTI) Traffic: Minimum Easy/Medium/Hard 375/500/625 Rewards: Olympic Square Circuit Track - Reverse Strategy: There's really no pressure here, unless you're playing this on Hard. Remember, last racer to cross the line each lap is eliminated, so make sure you don't make any mistakes (not like you'll do anything on this track, hopefully). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==================== Event No. 6/111 ==================== Rookie Tournament From: Samantha Tournament Race Series at Olympic Square, Olympic Square - Reverse, and Inner City (2 Laps each race) The Low-Down: A bunch of cocky newbies say they can crush you in a three-race series downtown. You gonna let 'em? Carl (Miata), Probes (Miata), Stefan (Miata) Traffic: Minimum Easy/Medium/Hard 3750/5000/6250 Rewards: Performance Upgrade Level 1: Engine/Exhaust Packages Performance Upgrade Level 1: Drivetrain Packages Performance Upgrade Level 1: Tire Packages Strategy: Your first tournament shouldn't be that hard, as you're probably used in racing these three tracks. To win, you must have the most points at the end of this series, so at least place 1st on two tracks and 2nd on one track. A tie will be counted as a loss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==================== Event No. 7/111 ==================== TJ's Time Trial (Select it to view a cutscene) From: TJ Time Trial at To Liberty Gardens The Low-Down: Get from the airport to the downtown core in [time] and see what TJ has in store for you! Traffic: *To be added* Easy/Medium/Hard 1:35.00/ 150/ Rewards: To Liberty Gardens Sprint Track TJ's Unique Reward (Engine/Exhaust Package, Drivetrain Package, Tires) Strategy: First off, you can either choose to accept or decline this "invitation." If you choose to accept, the times and the amount of money to be earned changes depending on the difficulty setting that you choose. If you choose to decline, skip ahead to the next event. Now, what you need to do in this race (and all other upcoming Time Trial events from TJ or Samantha) is to finish the track within the time limit given to you. You don't have to feel too pressured to race this event on Hard, so you can race it on Easy if you want to get used to these types of events. Once you finish this event, you'll be taken back to a menu, where TJ gives you a voice message. Continue on to select ONLY ONE Unique Performance Upgrade. Go on, take your pick. ^_^ More to come... ______________________________________________________________________________ VII.2 Rewards Here is the rewards list while winning races in Underground Mode, so you can check to see if you have obtained a certain reward as you progress through the races. Submissions are highly welcome!! ______________________________________________________________________________ VII.4 Making It Easy Here are a few tips on helping you win races in Underground Mode. 1. Some races will seem to be almost impossible to beat, even on Easy! The trick to this is that the CPU racers will be handicapped, meaning that even though their car is normally weaker than yours, you'll still get smoked. To fix this, try to downgrade your car, putting all of your Performance upgrades to Stock, or trading in your car for a slower car. Do this and you'll be able to beat that challenge in at least after one or two attempts. 2. Upgrade your car as soon as you get new stuff, especially Visual upgrades! These will help you get into some tournaments if your car has a high enough Reputation. Unique upgrades from Samantha will help boost your car's Reputation, while TJ's Unique upgrades will boost your car's performance. 3. Pick the Easy Difficulty. Plain and simple... ______________________________________________________________________________ VIII. Style Points Reward List These rewards are gained by filling up your style points meter at the end of each race. You have to fully fill up one bar to gain a new reward. Style Points are gained by how you drive, taking shortcuts, etc. Most Style Points are east to do, some are hard, and some may even take away your current total! The following Style Points obtainable are: 360 (+200 for 3 times only) This is only just for show, and is best recommended for use in Drift. The hard way to do it is to slam on the handbrakes while going straight, and hope that your car spins a full circle around, without hitting anything in the process. If you do that, you'll get this bonus. Another way to do this is to simply end up going around small circles, and you will easily get this bonus three times. The first three spins are counted, then the rest aren't counted. Clean Lap (+200 and can be multiplied times the number of laps available) As simple as it sounds, it's very hard to do with a fast car and some traffic. To obtain this, simply run a lap without hitting another car, hitting the sides, or slamming into a tree or a post, although depending on how hard you hit the sides of the track, you may or may not be penalized for that. Hitting signs will NOT be counted as damage, though... Clean Race (+500) An even harder bonus to obtain. It's best that you race around Olympic Square with only 1 lap, and no traffic, just hope that you won't hit anything other than signs. Obtaining this is the same as the Clean Lap bonus, although you have to stay "clean" during the entire race. Extremely hard with a fast car and with some traffic, but not impossible. Clean Section (+50 and can be multiplied up to 3) Still hard, but kind of easier. To get this, do not do anything stupid other than hitting signs until you see the next clock on top showing when did you finish that "section." Drafting (+Variable) Point the front of your car directly at the CPU racer in front of you to receive a boost; and this bonus depending on how long you are directly behind that car. I've also tried this on traffic, and it also works. Best done in Drag. Hang Time (+Variable) This bonus is obtained depending on how long you remain airborne during a jump. You can link jumps to increase your score even more (the hills near the finish line in Stadium). Head Start (+100) Simply get ahead of the other races when you start to get this bonus. Hit Traffic (-Up to 50, depending on how severe the crash is) This is very simple to do if you want to waste your hard earned Style Points. Just slam into traffic, plain and simple... Lead Lap (+100 and can be multiplied times the number of laps available) Cross the line while in first place to get this bonus. Near Miss (+100 and can be multiplied times up to 5; gives +500 when maxxed out at 5 times) Simply drive into oncoming traffic and drive past them by a small distance between the two of you. This can also work on traffic going your way. NOS Purge (+150) To do this, slam on your NOS just before you start off. You will not see the name of the bonus, but you will know you did it when smoke comes out of your ride and you get 150 points from the get go. It's also best when you get the Head Start bonus also for a total of 250 Style Points! Powerslide (+Variable) Kind of simple to do. While going into a turn, try to slide the back of your car out far. Force feedback-type controllers (like those of the GCN) will usually rumble when this is done with the handbrake. Shortcut (+100 everytime you go through one) If you go through shortcuts like the one after the hairpin on Olympic Square (forward), you will gain 100 points for going through it. Going through it again will not give you any more points. Keep in mind though, that some shortcuts will help you out, while others will simply waste your time if you don't know how to drive through it. Victory (+500) Simply finish in first place to get this bonus. Bonuses like Victory, and NOS Purge can only be obtained once. Bonuses like Near Miss will still continue to add the bonus to your score when it is maxxed out at 5 times, giving you 500 points instead of 100! Also, even if you lose the race, you will still get the points you obtained, unless you restart.
