INTRODUCTION:
Hello all. This FAQ covers the game World Cup Soccer for the NES. It is a
cool sports soccer game which is a lot of fun.

I am not going to bother with the copyright stuff. If you are low enough
to try to bank a profit off of this, or you decide to plagiarize it, that's
your wretched morality.

STORY:

It's a soccer game, you are going for the World Cup trophy-- 'nuff said.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONTROLS:

D-pad: Moves player. Also used to direct ball shots.

A: -makes player pass ball (offense)
    -tackle opponent (defense)

B: -shoot ball (offense)
    -slide into opponent (defense)

Select: none
Start: Pause

Additional moves:

Power Kick: Press A + B together to execute your player's super kick.
(max 5 times) or just B after a certain number of steps are
             taken.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
POWER/SUPER KICK

(Note: "Power" and "Super" are used interchangeably throughout this FAQ)

What would a video soccer game be without some spicy stuff? Each player on
a team can execute a special kick called a super/power kick. These kicks
are extremely powerful kicks which make the ball often do some acrobatics
around the screen before/while heading to the goal. These kicks are very
hard to block and are a good way to smash a score without trouble.

The kick is executed by pressing A and B together in normal cases. You can
also use the control pad while you do this. You are limited to 5 super
kicks per half (so at halftime, the 5 number limit is restored).

The second way to execute your super kick is by taking a certain number of
steps and then shooting with the B button. For all teams except USA, the
team has a certain number of steps needed before being able to do this kick.
For team USA, EACH player requires a different number of steps before this
can happen. There is no indication of the steps. The number of steps only
comes into play when your character has the ball.

New and valuable information has been contributed by Gokuma. Gokuma has
found the number of steps needed for each team (and in some cases, each
player) before you can do a power kick with just the B button.

Gokuma has given some good information concerning the power/super kicks, so
I'll just put his words here verbatim:

"Oh yeah, to do a running power shot, it's the exact number of steps since
you last stopped, no more, no less. Just stop, walk the certain number of
steps, and shoot.

I guess I worded it bad, but doing a bycicle kick, diving headbutt, or
running a certain amount of steps and shooting with all do super shots.
Once you use up your five supershots, the bycicle kick and diving headbutt
obviously just do normal shots, but walking a certain number of steps then
does the turbo A.K.A. high power shots.

Sometimes you'll see the computer do a super shot with a standing headbutt.
I'm almost certain that only the computer can do that. When I shoot the ball
with a standing headbutt when it's coming to me in the air, it just ends up
being a normal shot."

Big thanks to Gokuma for this information. The bicycle kick is the A+B
kick. The diving headbutt is A+B+left/right on the control pad.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEAM EVALUATIONS:

Here I am giving an evaluation of each player in each team and the team as a
whole. Each team is different and is better at different things (speed,
passing, etc.) Players usually differ in the speed and power areas. Speed
(how fast the player runs on the field) is obvious and can be seen, power is
harder to see. A rule of thumb would be that the slower the speed, the
stronger the player.

Each player is given a score for their speed(S). Speed is indicated by the
following:

1--slow
2--medium speed + and - are also used to show variations from these
3--fast scores

I am also giving a description of all super kicks. I am making up the names
for the kicks.

Note: Each team has 6 players on the field but has 8 players from which to
       choose.

I have done some changes to this section now. After playing through all the
teams, I have found that, except for USA and possibly Italy, ALL players in
a team have the same super kick. Therefore the kick the entire team uses is
mentioned at the top of the team introduction. Team USA is done differently
as EACH player has a different kick.

With Italy, it appears that the second super kick is the B button power
kick.

Using the B power kick, many "straight" power kicks can be aimed
diagonally (use the control pad when doing the B kick).

For Team USA, I will list the number of steps(Steps) required before that
player can do a power B kick. For all other teams, the number of steps
required will be listed at the top near the Team introduction. Except for
Team USA, ALL players in a team use the same number of steps.

(Example: In Holland's section, you will see "Team Steps: 8." This means
that ALL players of Holland's team require 8 steps before being able to do
their B power kick.)

Last word, players can be knocked out if hit to often or too hard. They
will stay out (lying on the ground not moving) until a goal is scored or the
half ends.

Ok, let's begin.

USA:
====
This team seems to be rather well-rounded but is rather on the slow side.
Most of the players are slow runners. Their super kicks overall aren't too
impressive and should be used when horizontally even with the goal (because
they are all straight shots).

P--Straight

Power Kick Description: The ball goes into the shape of a football and goes
horizontally straight across the screen at high
                         speed.

P--Fast

Power Kick Description: This starts just like the Straight, except the ball
stays in its original shape, and it will cut toward
the goal if you are not horizontally even with the
                         goal.

P--Bouncer

Power Kick Description: The ball bounces horizontally across the screen in
slightly long jumps, knocking out any players in
                         its way.

Power Kick Description: Acts just like the Straight, except the ball goes
into the shape of a pancake and rotates diagonally
                         while it moves forward.

P--Split Straight

Power Kick Description: Cool. The ball splits into two balls, which move
up and down near each other, then they merge and
fly toward the goal like the Straight.

P--Swirl/Float Straight?

Power Kick Description: This normally works like the Swirl Straight, but
one time I was below the goal line and did the
kick. The ball then acted like the Float Straight
(see the Float Straight description in Italy's
section). I haven't got it to work again like
                         this.

Power Kick Description: The ball becomes an oval and goes forward in a
zigzag motion. This Power Kick is rather difficult
to score with, as you can easily go OVER the goal.

P--Stop Straight

Power Kick Description: Just like the Straight, except the ball will stop
in place for a second before continuing. If you
are far enough away from the goal, it will stop
                         several times.

FRANCE:
======
France is a poor defense team. You will have to mostly tackle opponents
yourself, as the players will just run around the opposition. If anything,
the reason the players seem to avoid the opposition is to set up good
passing opportunities. It will be difficult to utilize these chances since
you will be the one basically taking on the whole opponent team yourself.

Ouch! Most powerful team in the game! This team is the semifinalist and
the next to last match you will have before facing the final team--which

TIPS, TRICKS, AND SECRETS

Your first fight is against Cameroon (easy to beat)--unless you ARE Cameroon.
Test your players here to see who you like so you don't get bad people in
later plays.

Make SURE you ALWAYS have a fast person on your team! Get at least one
person with a speed rating of 3. You'll need someone who can move around
fast to help in setting up good passes and catching up to the opposition if
they are too far down the field and you can't reach them in good time.

A VERY EFFECTIVE TIP TO WINNING: Pick Argentina or Mexico. Get a score,
then knock the ball out of bounds. Put your player in the center of the
screen. When the opponent's goalie kicks the ball, get to where the
ball will land (which will be on or near an opponent). Using good timing,
do your super kick (even if you don't have any) when the ball reaches you.
Guaranteed score with Argentina, less-so guaranteed with Mexico, and a
mighty good ego-booster when you continuously intercept the opponent's
shots. ^_^

If you are out of super kicks, this strategy then will let you stall for
time. No score, but believe me, versus Italy, stalling is your best friend.

Some interesting tricks from Fathead194@aol.com:

"I have a tip.

Stand near the sides of your opponents goal box and have your teamate
pass it to you. Move forward a little and do a header toward you own
goal, but press down or up on the d-pad. This is the curving header.
It should hit toward you opponents goal and really confuse the goalie!
Super headers with this are even better!

Also, you can tackle the goalie when he is out of the box!

And, if you play a two player game with a special court, and finish
the game, playing a tourny will use that type of court!

I have another EVIL trick!

If somebody on the other team is dead (knocked down forever), take the ball
out so he will through it in. Stand by him when he throws it in and push him
down when his teammate gets the throw-in. If it is a wing, the goalie might
kick it to him and it will go out and be your throw in!

Stand by the person throwing in when you go to tackle him.
He should be dead out of bounds :) "

The following is donated by Kevin Falk(NarcisKev@aol.com):

"Also there is a trick when playing with Japan. If you just stand right in
the goal box and ask for a pass in the air so that the goalie comes out to
challenge you, and stands in the same spot you are in, for some reason, if
you time it right, a Japan header seems to work everytime. This is just a
standing head butt. In other words, you head it directly in the goal rather
than the goalie catching it.

Also a tip to scoring standing head butts is set your guy on the corner of
the smaller of the two goal boxes, but up enought to be able to score a
straight headbutt. And wait for your teamate to have the ball in the upper
part of the field so that the goaling is on the upper post, and the ask for
the pass in the air, and the goalie won't move down until you do the
standing headshot, and by then it will be to late."

Kevin also states that if you do a backflip kick or standing headbutt that
is actually a superkick, the ball will go in the goal. If you are out of
superkicks and do the above moves, the opponent's goalie can catch your
ball.

The following is contributed by Jon Thomson
(jon@thomson2273.freeserve.co.uk):

"Always ALWAYS swap your 4 and 5 around (ie. swap your centre forward and
left winger around) - the #5 is quicker than the #4 and you can make
better use of the speed than the CPU. That's the only change you really need
to make.

Argentina's superkick can indeed be blocked if it's a diving header. However
someone else already pointed that out. Anything quick, overhead height and
on target will go in.

The best tactic set up is tackle automatically, dribble, shoot all the time,
GK doesn't join in. That's really pretty obvious.

There's the points, now the tricks:

Run down one of the channels (for those not in with football terminology,
call it level with the side of the penalty area) then shoot. Let's assume
you're on the nearside of the pitch. Instead of pressing up to direct the
shot, press down. This will look like the shot is going wide, but it will
only *just* go wide forcing the keeper into a save, leaving him out of
position to grab the rebound and score.

When you have a corner or throw in near the opponent's goal, stand in the
six yard box and have the player throw to you. The keeper will come to
claim, justnudge yourself closer to the ball and head home, leaving the
keeper looking like a melon :-)

When you've run out of superkicks, an angled (ie. with up or down) overhead
from just outside the box will confuse most goalkeepers.

Note that shoulder barging becomes ineffective very very quickly as you
progress through the tournament - only ever slide unless you're playing
someone really crap.

When your keeper has the ball, learn to tell your wingers to one touch pass
to you, ie. immediately head the ball on to you. Ensure you are positioned
so that the header doesn't go straight to their marker. If you are moving
when they head the ball (same with telling to pass in general) they will
pass the ball slightly ahead of you in the direction you are moving. This
allows a quick shot, overhead etc. if on the edge of the box. Don't bother
going in the box as it's easy pickings for the keeper. This is invaluable
against quick teams like Argentina and Italy, as it's the only real way to
move down the pitch without being tackled.

Learn to use the "CPU pass ahead" tactic as described above. This is great
on throws near the goal (you can score direct from a throw if you do it
right), and if running close to a winger you can flick it to him and get him
to head it more or less dead for an easy diving header.

When playing good teams, track back and defend...
