Release notes below belong to Cello beta release,
which was written for Distinct TCP/IP's interface.

The "cello.zip" refered to there is cello-dt.zip
on this archive,

The file cello-ws.zip is an archive of the later
alpha release of Cello for the winsock TCP/IP
interface, and should work with a variety
of winsock-compliant TCP/IP packages.

Beta Release 0.1

This file last updated on: 8 June 1993

Please read through this file before trying to install or
configure Cello; it should (we hope) save you some trouble.
Like any other networking software Cello takes a little time
and a lot of information to install.

The download/setup process for Cello has two major components:
downloading and unpacking the files you need, and following a
fairly elaborate set of instructions contained on the online
help system. This file describes the first part; once you're
all moved in and unpacked, you can fire up the Help system from
the Windows Program Manager to get the rest of the information
you need.

--------------------
1) Downloading files
--------------------

On fatty.law.cornell.edu you should find and download (if you
haven't already) these files:

README.1ST -- what you're reading

CELLO.ZIP -- Cello executable, help, and support files.
	       It contains:
	       CELLO.EXE the executable
	       CLOHELP.HLP the Windows Help file
	       CELLO.BMK Cello bookmark file
	       CELLO.STY Cello style file
	       DEFAULT.HTM Home page

DIS.ZIP -- TCP/IP stack used with Cello (zipped disk)
	       It contains:
	       FTP.DLL
	       TNET.DLL
	       OSLIB.DLL
	       RPC.DLL
	       SOCKET.DLL
	       GHOST.EXE
	       DISTINCT.EXE
	       CONFIG.EXE
	       CONFIG.HLP
	       IPX.COM
	       ODIPKT.COM
and a raft of other drivers.
This file has to be unpacked onto a blank floppy in order to
install properly; it's a zipped version of the Distinct runtime
diskette.

(optional stuff, but you'll end up wanting it:)

VIEWERS.ZIP -- Viewers and sound players to use with Cello,
contents will vary, but contains viewers for .GIF and .JPG
files, a sound player, and the Windows sound driver for the IBM
PC speaker (in a self-extracting EXE file called SPEAK.EXE).
Most of these are also available from
ftp.cica.indiana.edu or one of its mirrors, and the versions
there may be more recent.

GSWIN.ZIP -- Monster file containing all the stuff for Windows
GhostScript. I won't even guess at what all might be in there.
Permits you to view PostScript files from Cello.

------------------------------
2) Unpacking
------------------------------

You'll need a 1.2Mb or 1.44 Mb blank, formatted floppy disk.

Start by making some directories. These names aren't
mandatory in any way, but they are the ones that are used by
the documentation and the help system, so you'll possibly be
less confused if you use them. We suggest:

C:\CELLO for Cello executables and support files
C:\CELLO\VIEWERS for viewers and GhostScript
C:\CELLO\DOWNLOAD to hold files you grab with Cello
C:\ETC and C:\WINDOWS\DISTINCT to hold all the Distinct stuff
(and that's how all the documentation is written).

Unpack CELLO.ZIP into C:\CELLO.

Unpack VIEWERS.ZIP into C:\CELLO\VIEWERS.
If you're going to use the sound player, you'll have to move
the .DLL into your Windows directory. If you have no sound
card, you'll have to unpack SPKR.ZIP and install the sound
driver using the Windows Configuration applet.

Put your blank floppy disk into the appropriate drive (A:, for
the sake of argument). Switch to drive a: and unpack DIS.ZIP
onto the blank disk, USING PKUNZIP -D to preserve the directory structure.

------------------------------
3) Setup
------------------------------

Setup instructions for the whole megillah are in the Windows
Help file which comes with it. You can start this up by
starting File Manager, going to the C:\CELLO directory, and
double-clicking on CLOHELP.HLP. Installation help for the
Distinct stack can be found both in the Cello Online help file,
and in Distinct's CONFIG.HLP.

Have fun with it. I did, kinda, sorta.

Tb.
