Gopher Jewels has a completely new look and feel. The design
changes and added services represent our "unique" approach to
gopher subject tree design and content.
We offer this new approach to the Internet community as an
alternative to the more traditional subject tree design. Although
many of the features, individually, are not new, the combined set
represents the best features found on sites around the world. We
do not pretend to have the answer, but offer our solutions to
navigating information by subject as an experiment in the
evolution of information cataloging. Our focus is on locating
information by subject and does not attempt to address the quality
of the information we point to.
Basically, we are combining search tools with browse capability
from a collapsed top menu.
New version of Gopher Jewels now offers the following changes &
additions:
- Collapsed the top menu to one page
- Added Jughead search of all menus in Gopher Jewels
- Offer the option to jump up one menu level from any directory
- Offer the option to jump to the top menu from any directory
- Added Gopher Tips help documents
- Added Gopher Jewels list archives
- Added Gopher Jewels - Talk list archives
- Added other gopher related archives
- Made help and archives searchable (WAIS)
Pete Siemsen are developing tools that check Gopher Jewels for
broken links. The current version does not check paths, but Pete
says we'll have that capability (and more) shortly.
The idea is to have a program that will report (weekly) all links
that are bad (every day) of the previous week. This will give us
a good indication of what needs attention. YES - He will make
these tools public, once they are better refined. PLEASE don't
fill up our mail boxes asking for them! We'll let you know when
they are ready for public use and how to get a copy.

New Gopher Jewels sites in non-U.S. locations

These sites will have a copy of the latest version offered at our
U.S. site - the USCgopher (cwis.usc.edu). We are bringing these
new sites up with the release of this version of Gopher Jewels.
Watch for another announcement giving details on how they can be
reached.
We will be adding access statistices in the near future and are
examining the possibility of adding Jughead search logs. These
services will be of interest to the librarian community, as they
are interested in knowing what types of information users are
interested in and how they look for it.
