Saturday 6 July 2024 Five years Gemini already ========================= Much too late, I read that last month Gemini has reached its fifth birthday [1]. Time flies ... This is not my only confession regarding Gemini: * Stopped running a Gemini server In the past, I have run my own Gemini server and had some postings on it. When my Beaglebone Black didn't survive a failure in our home electrical power supply, I set up my Gopher server on a different board, but didn't set up a new Gemini server. * Stopped visiting Gemini-space It has been a while since my last visit to Gemini-space. My focus on Gopher-space grew, I really enjoy exploring Gopher burrows and reading phlogs. Gemini-space, of course, is just as wonderful as Gopher-space. Exploring Gemini-space or exploring Gopher-space is practically the same, the difference in user experience is negligible. It attracts the same kind of people which gives the two universes the same culture. Several Gemini clients function also as Gopher client, underscoring the equivalence of the two environments. Thriving community ------------------ Today I visited Antenna again, and it is wonderful to see that Gemini-space is a thriving community. It shows that people appreciate the protocol and like to create content and like to visit the Gemini capsules. It is great to see that the adoption of Gemini was not a short fling, and still is going strong. Gemini and Gopher ----------------- In my opinion the existence of the two universes, Gemini-space and Gopher-space is in a way something to regret. It brings a fragmentation into already (very) smol communities. When I started running my own Gemini server, I have thought about publication of posts on both platforms. It can help to add content to the universes, but otherwise I didn't see any added value in it. I tried to differentiate in the things I write, and put the more technical stuff on my already existing Gopher server, and other writings on Gemini-space. This didn't work out very well, it resulted in just a handful of postings on my Gemini capsule. Phlog-roll and Gemini --------------------- For now, I have added Antenna to my jump-list. In Gopher space, when I have the time I visit the aggregators, otherwise I use my own Phlog-roll to keep up to date with just a small number of phlogs. Perhaps I can extend my phlog-roll with some Gemini capsules. This way I don't have to run a Gemini server and still keep up to date with a few capsules. I use Elpher as Gopher client, which also functions as a Gemini client. It also recognizes links and make those "clickable" (just hit Enter). Therefor, extending the phlog-roll with some Gemini links wouldn't give me any trouble. But I am not the only user of my Phlog-roll, there are other people too. Another solution could be to add a second Phlog-roll to my Gopher server, specific for Gemini links. Something to think about, I am open to suggestions :) [1]: gemini://geminiprotocol.net/news/2024_06_20.gmi Last edited: $Date: 2024/07/06 07:40:20 $
