I wouldn't say this is scary or creepy, but it certainly was haunting,
and has stuck with me my entire life. Back when I was in high school, a
student who was a few years older than I died very suddenly. He was
about 19 years old. This kid was the the type of person that everyone
loved. He had severe (juvenile) diabetes, so much so that there were a
few times that ambulances had to be dispatched to the high school
because he was going into shock. He was one of the sincerest and most
genuine kids I've ever met. No matter who you were, you knew this kid to
be the nicest of people. Nobody fucked with him. So when he passed, it
sent a shockwave through the students, teachers, and parents of our
small school community. My Dad, in particular, took it hard. He was one
of this kid's teachers at the high school, and had him in his class. My
Dad and this kid had become good friends over the years. Flash forward
to his funeral, and we're all there. There was a huge crowd at the
funeral and later at the cemetery. But, I'll never forget... When we had
arrived at the cemetery, as his casket was being lowered into the
ground, his mother (who was already in tears and sobbing) began
screaming: "I WANT MY BOY BACK! I WANT MY BOY BACK! GIVE HIM BACK!"
Everyone heard her, turned to look, and an audible cry of sorrow and
sympathy rose up from everyone there. The mother was sobbing and
screaming this, as her husband helped her back to the car. She was
devastated. Up until that point, I had never seen that much pain in
another person. I have never forgotten that experience, and I reckon I
never will.
